Belgium is an accident of history, a political ineptitude, a rickety construction? Certainly, and that is where its opportunity lies: Belgium is constitutionally sheltered from any illusion, whether national, historical or cultural. Barely born, it has already seen it all. From the outset, it only had itself to cling on to. This “metaphysical nudity”, this “anthropological exception”, this “gain of existential time” are threatened by a wily, detestable and highly perverse phenomenon: Belgium is becoming fashionable! The Belgian has aged, he watches himself being Belgian and ends up mimicking his own image, necessarily caricatured, outlandish, demoralising. In the face of this distressing observation, artists are joining the resistance and, armed with all their cruelty, endeavour to take Belgium out of fashion. Will the exhibition lead to the exposure of Belgium? It is a lot more exciting than that: it is art without anaesthetic, it is the truth under the scalpel, it is surgical pleasure.”
