“Take her to a desert island and lock her in a cell with enough food not to stain our hands with her blood” (Extract from Antigone by Euripides) Robben Island, a prison on an island in the sea off Cape Town (South Africa) where prisoners of conscience were incarcerated, among them for 22 years Nelson Mandela.
John and Winston have been locked up there for three years. The former was condemned to ten years imprisonment and the latter to life. By day, under the burning sun, they each have to dig holes with a spade and then refill the holes made by the other. The work destroys spirit and mind. In the evening, in the confines of their cell, they repeat... Antigone. The text by Euripides is 2,400 years old, and recalls the corruption of power and the moral and religious justification for rebellion against tyranny.
