The director Raven Ruell does not shrink from solid spoken-word theatre. After Het leven en de werken van Leopold II, De Kersentuin (The Cherry Orchard) and Missie, he is now directing Heiner Müller’s version of the Greek classic Philoctetes, a frenzied ménage à trois which takes place against the background of the Greek-Trojan war. When Philoctetes receives a blow which puts him out of action in the battle against Troy, Odysseus leaves him behind on an island like a piece of rubbish until it turns out that he can’t win the war without him. This signals the start of a political sparring match between a cold pragmatist (Dirk van Dijck), a vengeful exile (Nico Sturm) and an ambitious unbeliever (Bruno Vanden Broecke) each of whom is angling for power, using their own weapons. Strong fare, with strong performers.
